A Hedge, a Farmer, and a Few Good People: How 300 More Metres of Biodiversity Took Root in Nottinghamshire

By Eoghan McHugh

At Protect Earth, we often find our paths crossing with people and businesses who care deeply about the same things we do: biodiversity and the Planet. One of those people is Ellie from Reuseabox—a company committed to 1% for the Planet. Ellie and her team have volunteered on several of our projects, and recently, we had the chance to work together again in a way that really demonstrates what can happen when you combine grassroots action with genuine collaboration.

It started when a farmer Ellie knows mentioned wanting to green up their land. They had the motivation and funds to plant 1,000 saplings but couldn’t quite see how to pull it off while also running the farm full-time. Ellie had a practical two-part response: she and her team would help with the planting, and, knowing the scale of the job, she also connected the farmer with us for advice, equipment, and extra hands.

But the farmer wasn’t done there. Inspired by what had already been achieved, they returned this past season with an even bigger ask: help to plant 300 metres of new hedgerows and shelter belts. Once again, we teamed up with Ellie and the Reuseabox crew to make it happen—and we were more than happy to do so.

Now, five years into our work, with over 170,000 saplings planted across the UK, we’re proud to be the team that volunteers and partners like Ellie recommend when someone needs a job done well. This project reminded us why we do what we do, and we’re already looking forward to the next one—with Ellie, the farmer, and maybe even with you.
