Join Us for High Wood Work Party Days: Make a Difference in Our Ancient Woodland!

By Phil Sturgeon

High Wood, nestled near Liskeard in Cornwall, is the jewel of Protect Earth’s conservation efforts thus far. This 64-acre expanse of ancient woodland, once partially converted into a commercial plantation, is being restored to its natural splendour, allowing for more biodiversity and community access. To bring this vision to life and ensure the woods are accessible and enchanting, we’ve launched the High Wood Work Party days—a series of monthly events where community spirit meets conservation.

What Are High Wood Work Parties?

High Wood Work Parties are all-day volunteer sessions dedicated to enhancing the forest’s beauty, making it more habitable for wildlife, and progressively transforming it back into the ancient woodland and temperate rainforest it once was. Each session involves hands-on activities that directly contribute to the restoration and enjoyment of High Wood for all.

Why Were Work Parties Set Up?

The concept of the Work Parties sprang from the positive response we received from community members who participated in previous events over the winter months at High Wood during Protect Earth’s regular tree-planting season. With the end of the planting season, community members close to High Wood wanted to stay connected and continue contributing to High Wood’s renaissance.

There’s always work to be done that brings us closer to our ultimate goal. During the Work Parties, we recently installed dormice boxes and levelled picnic areas for the Second Annual Open Day.

How Often Do They Run?

High Wood Work Parties run monthly, ensuring there’s always an opportunity to get involved, no matter the season. More information about dates for upcoming work days and plans for that day can be found here. These regular sessions allow us to maintain momentum in our restoration efforts and provide ongoing community engagement and participation opportunities.

Who Can Attend?

Everyone is welcome at High Wood Work Parties! Whether you’re looking to make new friends, spend quality time with family, or bring your school, community group, or workplace team for a rewarding day out, we encourage you to join us. The events are free and open to all, creating an inclusive environment where everyone can contribute and benefit.

Why Take Part?

Participating in a Work Party day offers numerous rewards beyond the satisfaction of contributing to a worthy cause. It’s a chance to enjoy fresh air, engage in physical activity, and experience the camaraderie of working alongside others who share your passion for nature. Plus, seeing the tangible results of your efforts in such a beautiful setting is incredibly gratifying. Rachel Brooks, one of the volunteers, said “I’ve really enjoyed checking tree guards and installing dormice boxes during recent work parties. There’s always a friendly welcome, clear instructions on what to do and a range of tasks to suit different abilities. It’s lovely being outside in the woods and spending time with the Protect Earth team and other volunteers. I always learn something new as well.”

Each Work Party is a step towards our overarching goal: restoring High Wood to its former glory as an ancient woodland and temperate rainforest. The collective effort of our volunteers is crucial in achieving this vision, and we’re thrilled that our community recognises and supports this important mission.
