Lower Hampen Farm: An Update

By Phil Sturgeon

We are delighted to share an update on Lower Hampen Farm, there we planted 1200 trees in February 2021, which will sequester approximately 565 tonnes of carbon by 2051.

Clive and Lydia, the landowners, had this to say:

“The shelterbelt looks brilliant. All growing well and very few losses indeed - possible 2-3 % only. The black poplar have come on well, and only some of the Scots pine are struggling - they do not like the spirals.

Most importantly, there is no hare or deer predation. There were 5 hares playing yesterday in the middle of the field next the bottom OSB. We’ve confirmed John Phillips’ observation that hares keep to the centre of fields.

We’ve surmised that they had plenty of other food for now, particularly with our benevolent farming systems. The OSB will therefore look fine now.”

Clive and Lydia have just launched their own excellent website - www.homegrownathampen.co.uk
