Protect Earth recently returned to a project we planted with a farmer near Cheltenham in 2022 for essential woodland maintenance, including restocking dead saplings. This work exemplifies our commitment to long-term woodland care and our dedication to ensuring every tree has the best chance to thrive.
About the Project
In 2022, we partnered with a local farmer to transform unused farmland into nature-friendly spaces. Together, we planted 710 saplings to create small woodlands and shelterbelts. Shelterbelts act as natural windbreaks, offering protection to farmland while connecting fragmented woodland areas, allowing wildlife to move freely and safely.
The Importance of Ongoing Woodland Maintenance
Woodland maintenance is a critical part of our mission at Protect Earth. After planting, the journey isn’t over. Regular care, including tending to and restocking young trees, ensures these green spaces’ long-term success. This commitment benefits biodiversity, strengthens ecosystems, and supports the surrounding environment.
Here’s why woodland maintenance matters:
Fulfilling Commitments: When we secure funding, we commit to planting and maintaining trees to meet our ecological goals. Restocking ensures we meet these promises.
Leading by Example: We believe in demonstrating best practices as a biodiversity-focused charity. Maintaining our woodlands reinforces our dedication to lasting environmental impact.
Mitigating Losses: Despite careful planning and using native species from local nurseries, sapling loss is inevitable. Timely restocking keeps woodland regeneration on track.
Returning for Restoration
On our return to Cheltenham, we worked with the farmer and nine enthusiastic volunteers to plant 100 new saplings. Some replaced those that didn’t survive, while others expanded and strengthened the shelterbelts. Despite braving tough weather and battling brambles, our team completed the restocking efficiently and even had time for additional woodland maintenance tasks.

By the end of the day, we had a healthier habitat, a happy farmer, and a habitat strengthened to continue doing what it’s naturally evolved to do for wildlife and biodiversity.
Looking Ahead
Protect Earth’s role doesn’t end with the last tree planted. Woodland maintenance is an ongoing process that ensures that the landscapes we restore flourish. Our dedication to long-term care reflects our belief in the power of natural spaces to support biodiversity and tackle climate change.
