Set in the countryside of Warwickshire near the village of Bubbenhall, this farm known as Warwickshire Lavender Farm is undergoing a transformation. This land was about to be sold to a housing developer, but the new owners managed to grab the land last minute to protect it. The unproductive farm now has a new lease of life, growing and processing lavender into natural products. Protect Earth will be planting 1.5 acres of unused field this winter, and we’ll also plant one acre of wildflower meadow in spring as the autumn planting window was missed.

Our ecologists surveyed for existing habitats, and found evidence of owls and badgers. We don’t want to do anything that will mess with them, so we’re avoiding planting near the badger dens and will be leaving lots of the land unplanted, as wildflower meadow which will still provide a hunting ground for owls, but sequester more carbon than the introduced grass species currently in the field.

This area is also in a Nation Habitat Network ‘Fragmentation Action Zone’ - which relates to ‘Land immediately adjoining existing habitat patches that are small or have an excessive edge to area ratio where habitat creation is likely to help reduce the effects of habitat fragmentation’. This could mean the site is perfectly positioned to feed into the goals of defragmentation in the area, and we will cater the species selection and density to maximise benefits for the biodiversity of the area.

August 2025

Survival Survey
70% survival rate

Angus, the site inspector, visited Bubbenhall in August 2025. He counted 5 sample areas of trees, finding a 70% survival rate. The landowner tells us “The trees that were replanted in 2023 seem to be doing ok, only half the hedgerow is thriving though, we had an influx of rabbits and as the hedgerow had not all got tree guards I think some of them succumbed to rabbit attack!”.

Angus mentioned seeing daytime birds of prey and owls at night in the area, a positive sign indeed for ecological value in the vicinity.

Restocking
375 trees restocked

A vitally important part of what Protect Earth does once we’ve put the trees in the ground is maintenance and restocking, there is a lot to be done during this most vulnerable time in the tree’s life.

On this occasion, we placed down mulch mats to suppress the grass growing around the tree. Along with pulling out grass and weeds growing inside the tree guards, whilst making sure the stakes were straight and firm into the ground.

It was identified based on the survival rate of the initial planting that we needed to restock 375 trees and 25 shrubs, with a small team of corporate volunteers over two days we got the job done!

Tree Planting
758 trees planted

Protect Earth were delighted to contribute to the natural environment at this wonderful site, Warwickshire Lavender Farm near Bubbenhall. Firstly, work began by planting a species-rich native broadleaf woodland on 1.87 acres, consisting of oak, chestnut, hornbeam, small-leaved lime, wild cherry, whitebeam, wild service tree, holly, hazel, and field maple. Secondly, a hedgerow planting consisting of: hawthorn, hazel, holly and guelder rose. And finally, 1.00 acre of wildflower meadow. With a solid plan and amazing support from the landowner, thirty volunteers worked over three days to make it happen. Many thanks to our forestry consultants for this project, Lockhart Garratt, who provided the expert advice on surveying, tree species choice and woodland design.
