The school’s headteacher tells us: “The children have really enjoyed seeing the trees grow, even just a little. It’s been a gentle but powerful reminder of the passage of time and how small actions can lead to lasting change. The planting was a positive and memorable experience for everyone involved. It brought the school community together and left a lasting impression on the children. We’re really grateful to have been part of something so meaningful.”

Unfortunately, when we went to carry out our survival survey we were very disappointed to discover a survival rate of only 35%. The ground was extremely dry and it would appear that all of the trees did grow buds but many died before they grew leaves.

Obviously, we need to give some thought on how to proceed here.

As communities braced themselves for Storm Bert’s arrival, a group of schoolchildren in Oxford showed how local action can offer hope amid the challenges of climate change. Two corporate groups of ten volunteers each from Sozo Design and Capsule Cover plus some of the parents turned up to help these Year 5 and 6 students planted a mini-forest on unused school grounds. In and around the trees we scattered wild flowers and 300 Spring bulbs to add colour and interest for the children, and helping to increase biodiversity, creating a legacy of learning and resilience.

Protect Earth was proud to assist with planning and planting, helping the students understand trees' vital role in tackling climate change. Just days later, Storm Bert served as a sobering backdrop, underscoring the urgency of their work and the impacts of a warming planet and changing climates. This mini-forest won't reach its full potential until these students are adults, but as the old adage goes; the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second-best time to plant a tree is today.

Engaging students in hands-on projects like tree planting strengthens climate change education by connecting learning with action. These experiences empower future generations to drive environmental progress and community resilience. In the face of challenges like Storm Bert, such initiatives remind us of the importance of empowering communities.
